Microsoft Access is old software – it’s been around since the early 1990s, and that means different things to different people: either it’s too old and to be avoided, or it’s tried and tested, reliable technology.

As always, the truth is a bit of both! The trick is in knowing which bits are useful and which bits are outdated and better done a different way.

We tend to view Access as a powerful and flexible “front end” – something with which to build user interfaces and screens quickly and easily, but we prefer to use a full-featured SQL Server database as the “back end” data store.
